Cape Cod Fishing

I was invited out with the Daddy Mac Lures crew to fish the commercial black sea bass day. Jack and Dennis, the owners, brought along Jack's two boys, Colton and Jack Jr. My day began at 1am with a 4:15am meeting time in Cape Cod. After figuring out the logistics and fishing location we departed and were afloat by 5:30am. As we made our way across the Vineyard Sound the sun provided a breathtaking view as it rose above the Aquinnah Cliffs. The seas started out quite flat and built as the day progressed, but that didn't seem to hurt the fishing. We had our 150 pound limit in about four hours. We used all single-hook Daddy Mac Lures. 2.8 ounce diamond jigs (with no bait) worked well, but the hot bite came on the 2.8 ounce Elite jig in sand eel green with green tubes on the hooks. These jigs were irresistible to the sea bass and also worked well on scup and bluefish. The key was keeping the jig as vertical in the water column as possible. As soon as the line started to get out away from the boat reeling in and dropping down again was necessary to keep consistent bites coming. The Daddy Mac Drop is a technique that worked well. It consists of dropping the jig to the bottom and shaking it with fast, but short, jerks. You have to see the DM drop to really understand it, but trust me it works. After we limited out on sea bass we headed inshore to fish for fluke (summer flounder). There are few, if any, fluke near me and I had never caught one before, so I was excited at the prospect of catching my first one ever. I was really hoping for a keeper. I love eating flounder and fluke provide larger fillets than the winter flounder I am used to. By this time the wind was cranking and we were drifting in the wrong direction. With the motor in gear Jack was able to power-drift and correct for the wind which almost immediately put us on fish. Minutes later I caught my first fluke and wouldn't you know it, it was also a keeper, and the only keeper of the day. We caught all of the fluke using 6 ounce bucktail jigs (which were some of the original DM lures from back when the company was called Bait Weights) with a trailer hook that was tipped with my signature series, Whisperer lure, and a thin bluefish strip for scent. We fished for another few hours and landed several more under-sized fluke before we lost the tide and decided to call it a day.

Great work. Sounds like a good day! The DM obviously works. :)
