I ran a half day fly fishing trip this morning on the Milwuakee River and needless to say it was a very tough bite. My cliented ended up breaking off a big brown trout and a very nice chinook on the fly rod. After missing two other strikes I decided to go check the gravel streches for spawning fish. This is when I noticed something very interesting. There was NOTHING on redds. Even though there were fish further up the river as of last week spawning, there was nothing in the middle streches. I also saw only one dead chinook. All of the active fish were in the deeper holes of the river. With the evidence I saw today and for how cold the water is, I'm highly confident the "main" push of fish have not entered the river yet. Typically if the chinook run were to be winding down there would be coho's every where but I only saw a handful jumping in the deeper holes. It will be interesting to see how many more fish move into the river systems in the next few weeks.
