Winter Green! Ice Fishing Lake Winnipeg

It is almost time to get the ice rods out! I have already started preparing my gear for the 2014/2015 ice season, and I can't wait to get out there and hook up with some big Lake Winnipeg Greenback Walleyes! One of the most important items to bring with you is a GPS, I can't stress this enough. We have been out on the Lake a few miles out when suddenly the wind picks up, or it starts snowing, and visibility becomes zero. Not only can a GPS unit save good fishing spots it can save your life too. Fishing on Lake Winnipeg can be challenging. There is little to no structure on the lake and sometimes the best way to find schools of fish is to move around every 15-20 minutes until the action picks up, then you can move shorter distances and less often. The weather usually plays a factor and will dictate whether or not you can move, sometimes you have to put up a shelter for warmth on the cooler days. When choosing a rod I would recommend a longer ice rod with a medium action. I use the 5'2 Rapala RType Jr Tournament Series, and it comes in 2-piece for easy transport and storage. You want to have a rod that will allow you to control the fish, the Greenbacks fight hard and sometimes a light action rod won't cut it! The go-to lure for us, year after year is the Jiggin Shad Rap. When the bite gets tough we put one on and can usually entince a few to bite. Always make sure to try many different lures and presentations throughout the day. Color can be important as well, and each day is different. One day they may like a blue spoon the next day they might want a pink jig with a salted minnow, the only way to find out is to try different things. Some of my best lures are (and not limited to) the Jiggin Shad Rap, Jigging Spoons, Rattlin Rapala Crankbaits, Rippin Raps and a good assortment of different color jigs! I hope everyone had a great summer, see you on the ice!
