The split shot rig

A split shot rig is a finesse version of a carolina rig minus the 1oz weight, beeds, swivel and leader. It's proven deadly on lethargic bass or when fishing pressure is high on a body of water. The split shot rig is a shallow water technique fished in water 20 feet or less, the deeper you fish it the less contact you have with the bait, so I fish it around shallow points, flats or grassy flats, stumps and along the bank. My favorite plastics to use is a 3" Berkley Powerbait Chigger Craw or a Berkley Powerbait Power Lizard, but any finesse plastic will work just fine. For weight size I like to use size 2 to 4 split shots. For weight placement, I like to have it about 18 to 24 inches from the hook. Hook size is pretty simple, I'll use a Gamakatsu 2/0 offset round bend worm hook. Equipment I like to use is a 7'0" Medium to medium light spinning rod and a Abu Garcia Revo SX 30 spinning reel. For line, I like 6-8lb Trilene 100% fluorocarbon. The retrieve of the rig is fished just as you would a carolina rig, make a long cast and slowly drag it back. When should you throw it? I've had success through out the entire season, there really isn't a bad time to throw the split shot rig. I hope this tip / technique helps you out! Give it a shot, who knows maybe it will help win you your next tournament!!

Hey man I am also a huge fan of the carolina rig and the idea of the split shot but have had real problems with the weight moving and or damaging the line. Maybe its the brand of weights or line diameter. I have also tried different versions of mojo rigs set up and have not found anything that Im truly happy with. I am not sure but I know its a deadly rig any thoughts from your experience would be appreciated!

Andrew Oliver, Ever since I saw a demo video of palaniuk with those money makers Ive been absolutely hooked on em. The presentation you get is unreal. I have yet to use them in a Carolina style rig but i can imagine they will have equally triggering affect. good input !

Kyle, I think you'll be impressed with the Money Maker. The XL Fluoro is becoming my favourite! Andrew
