Waters getting low but the steelhead are still biting

Today 3-24-15, I ran a full day guide trip on the Root River in Racine WI and needless to say I had to WORK for my money today. It seemed like over night the river got extremely low and I figured it was going to be another run and gun style of a day, which it was. I brought my clients to the first hole I started in yesterday and it almost started the same way. First drift, FISH ON! But shortly after, it got off. While instructing my client on how far to drift (third drift) I told him to go ahead and reel in and all of a sudden his 12'6 Shimano Convergence was doubled over with a very nice male steelhead on the other end. After that spot we made a move which produced a smaller 12'' steelhead. We then moved around and found a spot with a few active brown trout. While the client who caught the first two steelhead bowed up with two brown trout, his friend couldn't buy a bite. I took his bead pattern rig and showed him the area to drift but all of a sudden his float shot down with a very heavy brown at the other end. Unfortuntally he broke it off while I was walking to get the net. At noon we decided to take a lunch break. After lunch we went into another known hole that is typical of holding fish but this time it only held one smolt steelhead. I then told my two clients we should circle back and work the hole we started in, hoping the sun beating on the water warmed it up and the fish in that hole would become actvie. Luckly I was spot on with that statement. The guy who had only caught the smolt ended up tying into a very nice male steelhead and shortly after broke a very big steelhead off. Overall we ended up going 4 for 6 (not including the two smolt) which is very respectful for this early in the season. With the number of males in the river only means the females are soon to come. The weatherman is calling for rain tonight and tomorrow which hopefully bumps the rivers up and pushes fresh fish in.
