MI Free Fishing Weekend

This past weekend was "free fishing weekend in Michigan. Meaning, no license needed to get out on the water. Well I took full advantage of this to get my wife out despite having had 4 of rain fall on us the night before. Since she hadn't been fishing since she was a little girl, I decided to keep it simple. In this day and age of finesse plastics, top water lures, crank baits and jerk baits I figured the easiest way to get someone into our great sport would be the good old fashioned hook and worm. Targeting panfish, I pulled a K&E Tackle No Tangle Rig out of my bag and asked her to get it get it out of the package while I cut up a few night crawlers. After she had it ready to go I added a sinker and showed her how to thread a worm onto the hook and how to cast, and she took right to it. I got myself set up the same way, cast my line and the waiting game began. It was a really slow day, as the water looked like coffee (remember the 4" of rain the night before) and we kept getting caught on grass floating on top of the water. However, as a few guys walked over and talked to us she got to see firsthand the comradery that extends between us fishermen. Despite the conditions, we did get a fish, a little white bass, and I'll admit that she caught it. Even though the fishing was a bit tough and the circumstances were not perfect, we had a couple of hours out on the water together that made for some good memories. Until next time friends....

Good Stuff Joe, keeping it simple for a new comer to the sport is key to getting them hooked
