Wisconsin Perch Opener
Wisconsin's Lake Michigan Perch season offically reopened for the year on June 16 and from the sounds of things, the bite was extremely spotty at best. I was up at 0500 with all of the intentions of taking the boat out to hammer on the perch but I quickly decided it was a better idea to grab a cup of coffee and watch some fishing shows due to the strong north/northeast winds keeping me shore bound. Typically my favorite shore spot produces a lot of fish at high noon so I waited till 1100 to get moving. Once I got to my spot I asked an old timer (who I've fished with many times) how the bite was and he informed me that it was very slow and that he had only seen 4 perch caught all morning. It didn't take but 30mins until I hooked up with a small perch but then that was it for me. The old timer did end up with one very nice 11-12'' perch and missed another one while using fathead minnows under a slip bobber. I ended up meeting my cousin down there and he ended up with a smaller perch as well using tube jigs. Thanks to high winds we have been having I have only been able to get out for a hour one other day with one gobbie to show for it. I have high hopes for this weekend seeing there is a small window of west wind.
