Your 1st Boat!

If you have a question the Pure Fishing Team has the answer. The Ambassador Team wants to help NPS members become better anglers and to help you get there the Team will be answering member questions. The Pure Fishing Team received the following question from an NPS member. Ambassador, What kind of boat would you recommend for a first time buyer and new to drive boats? M.B. Pflueger and Fenwick Ambassador Steve Chiasson of Cambridge, Ontario, offers the following advice: Hi MB, This is a difficult question to answer as so much depends on what you fish for, where you fish, and what kind of budget you have to work with. Here are some general thoughts regarding purchasing a boat. If you have little experience with boats, summon the help of a friend or a reliable dealer who can walk you through what you need based on some of the questions above. Do your homework and see what's available and what the going rate is on the type of boat you are interested in buying. That way you know whether or not the boat is being offered is at a reasonable price. There are some excellent deals on used boats out there if you are patient enough to wait for the right one to come along. I would advise you not to "settle" for a smaller boat if you have your heart set on a larger one. For example, let's say you want a 16' boat but settle on a 14' boat. You will regret that decision and suffer from 2footitis which means you will want to sell your 14' boat in a year or two and then you have the headache of a trade in or selling it before you purchase your next one. The other major piece of advice I would offer you is to not under power your boat. If it is rated for a 90 horsepower motor put a 90 on it as the boat will perform so much better. For most first time buyers, a 16-18' aluminum is an overall great choice because it's versatile allowing you to fish good size waters and small waters alike. It's lighter and easier to pull than a fibreglass rig and more economical on fuel. This can save you money as you won't have to purchase a larger, gas consuming tow vehicle. Once you find that special rig, you are looking for then you can load it up with some rod and reels outfits. Abu Garcia, Shakespeare, Mitchell, Pflueger, and Fenwick rods are some quality names to look for when purchasing new gear for your boat. Best of luck, happy boat hunting. Steve Chiasson The Pure Fishing Team is made up of experienced and knowledgeable anglers from across the country that fish for just about anything that swims. Is there something fishing related that you're unsure of or would like to have someone else's perspective? If so, please forward your question(s) to myself and someone from the Pure Fishing Team will answer the question(s) here on NPS and no names will be used, you'll remain anonymous. Keep the questions coming! There's no such thing as a ridiculous question if you don't know the answer! Concernant notre projet Q et R, S.V.P. noter que vous pouvez également soumettre des questions et recevoir des réponses en français. See You On The Water, Andrew
