First Swim Bait Success

I have labeled myself as "not a swim bait guy". I follow a lot of people who seem to always fish big baits. I am always intrigued about the techniques and ways to approached big bait fishing. For myself, I am always focused on doing well in my next tournament, finding patterns and concentrations of fish. I am not out hunting for trophy sized largemouth on every outing. With that being said I have always wanted to understand how people can consistently catch above average sized fish, how big baits work and attract big fish. I have thrown some big swim baits without success in the past. It has always been hard for me to keep throwing a big bait when it just doesn't seem to be working. How do you build confidence in a bait when you are getting blanked every time you pick it up? Well this weekend I decided to catch a swim bait fish. I know that in southern California if you can catch them on a big bait the chances for a monster are a true reality. I mentally prepared myself to throw a big bait and expected to see followers and hope for bites. It finally happened. I went out and threw the bigger bait in situations that I would fish a small swim bait, topwater, or jig. I targeted areas where fish should be this time of year. I changed my approach from the past and was happy to have the pay back. I know that there will be times where this technique will definitely help put a big bag in the boat. It is nice to add a little confidence to a new technique that can only help in being as versatile of an angler as I hope to be.

Nice work. I'm not a swimbait guy either myself but have forced myself to give it more time this season.
