Fishing New Water

Over the May long weekend, I decided to get out the old 14-foot aluminum and head to a new lake. I decided to look at the Frontenac County region. An area where there are 10,000 lakes and ended up on Fortune Lake. I only had a few hours and I didn't fell like doing any panfish fishing. So I got the aluminum hooked up to the truck, trolling motor battery charged, the batteries on my phone and tablet all charged up. The next day, I'm off to the lake with the boat in tow. Did some research online and I figured I had them figured out. At the lake, the next day and launched the boat amongst the millions of mosquitos and off I go. Using the bracket and arm so that I can attach it to the side of my boat I'm using this portable fish finder (Deeper) that is no larger than a baseball. This works via wi-fi with you cell phone or tablet. They make various models from the Deeper starter to now the Deeper Chirp+2 smart sonar. The Deeper smart sonar gives me the features of the sonar of most other sonars but it takes up less space when traveling. Use it for shore fishing, boat or kayak fishing. Using my Deeper sonar, I was able to follow the weedline and also search for rock piles near points and locate some walleye. Using my Quantum Drive spinning combo and Angler's Choice soft Wally Min-R and Crappie Fry was used when I downsized to try and get more bites. All in all it was fun day out on a new lake and I kept one for the pan. I usually practice catch and release however, this is a resource we are allowed to harvest. So harvest what you will consume and the let the rest go. So head out to a lake that you have never been on before. Do some homework beforehand. Look online for any information about the body of water you are going to. There is lots of information and great website out there, you just have to take the time to read and look through them. Also, Google Earth is also a great way to get the lay of the lake before even heading out there. Take a kid fishing, they are the future of our sport, and go out and enjoy the outdoors.
