13 Fishing - Muse Gold Rod Review

13 is well-known for their open water bass rods and has added a Walleye specific rod to the arsenal with their Muse Gold Series. Depending on the style of fishing you prefer, there are plenty of options for line weight, action and length. I am a big fan of the 13 ice fishing rods because of the attention to detail on the handle and guides. For the MUSE, 13 maintained their reputation for a well constructed and high quality rods. Not only does the rod look beautiful, it definitely brings the function to back up that flash. I recently used my 6'-9" medium action rods to target walleyes as its designed. I started the day throwing jigs up into the shallow areas off some weedlines. The length here made it perfect for pitching right where I wanted. Later in the day I used the same rod for rigging with a leech. In the past, I have used two different rods for each application. However, the MUSE was versatile and performed well in each application. Whether it was pitching jigs or rigging, there were two things that really stood out about this rod. The first was the unique combination of sensitivity and forgiveness at the tip. I could feel each rock and instantly differentiate that small bump from a hesitant walleye. On this particular day, I did not bring my "A-game" and actually had a very light bites that I missed. However the forgiveness here was unlike any rod I've used. After giving it some line, that fish was still there and never felt my mistake. The other thing I noticed was the confidence I had with a fish on. The thing I love and hate about walleyes is the distinctive head shaking. This action many times results in the fish coming off because they can create slack the line. However, this rod had such solid rebound that there was never a question about keeping enough tension on the line and I didn't lose a fish all day. After a full day on the water, I was very impressed with the MUSE and I commend 13 for recognizing the need for a species specific rod that helps walleye fisherman have a better day on the water.
