Be Prepared for the Soft Water

With spring just around the corner, its time to start getting the boat prepared for the open water. I know its only March but some of us hit the open water already in April. So here are a few things to consider besides the quick wash/wax and vacuuming. Like most of us the battery or batteries have been stored inside. You want to ensure that they are fully charged and have the proper amount of electrolyte in them. You will want to use the proper electrolyte because minerals in tap water can damage your batteries. Before installing them, check your leads for frayed wires on the connections. Clean up the posts and battery connectors with a post cleaner and/or wire brush. Replace the connections if necessary. If you haven't done so in the fall, make sure the lower unit has fresh gear oil as per the manufacturer's specification. Replace the spark plugs with new ones. You will have to ensure the gap is correct before installing because they do not come pre-set. Another thing that gets overlooked, are the connections for sonar's and electric motors. Simply look at the connections and make sure there is no green oxidization on them. These can be cleaned with a brake cleaner and a brush. There is a product that can be used on any electrical connection that will disperse water. It's similar to silicone and it will provide protection as well as better continuity. While we are on the topic of electrical components, check that all your fuses are good. Also check your toggle switch connections are not oxidized and that the switches are working as intended. Add a fuel treatment when you fill up the tank in spring. This will help clean any residue that could have formed in the gas line from the fuel sitting. Also add some stabilizer to help burn off any condensation that may have formed in the tank. This step can be avoided if you add stabilizer and top up the tank before storage. That way condensation and gummed up fuel will not be an issue in the spring. By spending a day doing these few maintenance items, you can ensure when you do get on the water, it will be worry free.
