Can/Am Walleye Tournament

The past weekend Ron James and I fished the Canada/US Walleye Tournament. I have shared a short report that Ron has wrote about our weekend. This report pretty well sums up our weekend. Thanks Ron always a good time when we fish together. CAN/AM WALLEYE TOURNEY! I (Ron) had the pleasure of fishing the Canada/ US Walleye tournament on Sturgeon Lake out of beautiful Bobcaygeon, Ont. Canada. First I would like to thank all the volunteers that make this event one of the best organized tournaments I have ever fished. My fishing partner for this event (the same as last year) was Scott Homes Rapala pro staff co-ordinator and guide of Kawartha Lakes Guide Service. Thanks again Scotty, had a blast. This tourney is a very interesting, there is a slot limit on Sturgeon Lake for the walleye that is between 30 and 50cm you can keep four per angler but this was a catch and release event. The goal is to catch your best six fish between the two of you in the slot and bring them to the scales, sounds easy right? Well let me tell you it was not that easy at all. Scott and I pre-fished on the Thurs. before the event and found some good fish that were in the slot so we were excited to get going on Sat for the two day event. We got off to a good start but the fish we had in the slot had moved so we were catching fish that were over the slot, fish that were in to the 60 to 70cm range. Nice to catch but you can't win with those fish so we made a few adjustments and managed to bring five fish to the scale on Sat weighing almost eight pounds. Doesn't sound like much but the leader was around thirteen pounds so we were still in the hunt. Day two we started where we had caught our best fish the day before as we had some very active fish there in practice and they were the fish we were looking for right in the slot. First fish Scott hooks into was a big one, too big so we were fishing around and ended up with a keep (just) about 31cm but it was a start. After a couple hours and hooking in to a muskie we decided to make a run to another spot where we had hooked fish the first day. It was a very popular spot as half the field was there and we knew that going down there but we found some fish a lot shallower then most. We get there and in a couple of hours we hooked into one fish in the slot and four others over. It was tough so we decide to head back up the lake to fish the spot we fished in the morning but time ran out and only took two fish to the scales for day two. That's the way it goes sometimes. I would like to thank Scott Homes and Ambleside Cottage Resort in Bobcaygeon, Ont plus all the guys that stayed there...I had a great time and will be back next year to try and win.
