Getting in the winter strike zone for Steelhead
Lake Ontario Tributaries ON
Jan. 15, 2012 6:54pm

Spent a brief couple hours Saturday afternoon out on the tribs with my Dad, a close family friend Lenny and 2 NPS Amateurs Mathew Branton and Dan Lenahan.
Conditions were -16 and with windchill -22, so there was a lot of line freeze and slush!
Matt ended up going 3 for 5, my dad 0 for 2, and myself going 1 for 4. Unfortunately loosing more than we landed due to the ice on the edges of the banks and rivers, either having them break off or going under the ice and being able to shake free.
Our key to success was using over sized floats 8g -11g, with bulking up on our splitshots en order to punch threw the slush and ice to get close to the bottom with our roe bags.
With the weather being so cold we decided to call it an early day knowing we were satisfied with even hooking up on a few.
Unfortunately with the temps be so cold we weren't able to get back out on Sunday due to most of the rivers being completely frozen over.
Have to wait now till either another mild spell for the rivers to open or continues cold weather to get more black ice and be back out ice fishing on the lakes!

Tightlines!
