What casting lures for catching our salmon

Often I get asked what lure will work best casting for coho and Chinook salmon on our East Coast Vancouver Island beaches. There is no one lure that works 100% of the time. I carry three kind of casting lures, spoons, spinners and lead lures. All have conditions were they would produce and cast better under various conditions. With winds, waves, tides, debris, and currents effecting every outing its important to carry a selection of each kind. Weights also vary but we favour 3/8 ounce to ½ ounce with our long 13-foot ultra lite rods with reels loaded with 8-pound mono line. Colours also can have a positive effect. One of the latest is copper . Not sure why. When all else failed during an adventure we put an old copper spoon on and we were rewarded immediately into salmon. Since then we make sure we have some copper lures on us. Lucky Strike Bait Rainbow spoons have a backside face copper colour. Another colour combination is a hammered brass spoon with a bright orange stripe like the Crock . Successful manufacture will constantly test out new ideas . AP Tackleworks is prime example. Their lures are for trolling and made of stainless steel. That strength and their durability allow them to endure the hard ship that our big salmon put lures under. Thinking out of the box they are now venturing to create the same lures but as casting lures. I had the privilege to try out a herring prototype and after landing the 5th coho we new that they were on the right track. Spinners, we have had luck with various pinks, purple, orange, blue, chartreuse green and pink. . The latest and consistent producer is the squid spinners weighing 1/4 - 3/8 ounce from Olympic Tackle mfg. With our strong winds that often plagued us they listened to our test result and produced a heavier 1/2 ounce version that has become our main lure for spinners. The lead lures like the Zinger and the Buzz Bomb work well with white, pink, green, blue, and orange . I am sure other colours will work also but these are what we have had success with. The bottom line all anglers should be prepared for all conditions that Mother Nature will throw at us to become successful.
