Cowichan River Drift

I drifted the Cowichan River with Alex West guide and owner of iGUIDE BC last Wednesday 7 hours on this amazing river. The River was low and the drift boat bottom out a few times. We threw allot of gear and fly. The first two hours I was using the Amundson Outdoors 2 handed spey rod. Winter steel heading with a fly is very challenging. We saw a lot of fish on their reds and we left those alone. Once we left the fly fishing zone the gear came out. Using center pins, level wind and spinning reels we again used a lot of various gear on each run. At the end of each run we used spoons last to cover the run . During one of the runs the first cast with a spoon from Alex and the summer came and slammed it. What a fight and thanks to Lucky Strike Bait Works rubber retractable handle salmon net we were able to land the steelhead safely without damaging the fish by removing its protective slime or scales. A quick photo and a safe release . It pays to have a lot of assortment of gear as you never know what will bring you success
