Plugs catches keeper salmon

Tomic, Luhr Jensen J-Pug, Silver horde plug, Lucky Louie, and Lyman plugs all have brought in keeper Chinook salmon and Coho salmon. Why fish with plugs instead of hoochies, spoons, and bait? Still to this day, since plugs created for salmon fishing, it is still the most productive lure to catch keeper Chinook salmon. We all like to fish with flashers with spoon and hoochie, spoon, or bait. But we all hook fish with these setups. Nevertheless, we do hook many undersized or small keepers Chinook salmon. And we still stick with fishing those setups instead of plugs. It is hard to change something that is working fine. Have you felt that fight just with the fish without any extra resistance? It will catch more keepers Chinook salmon. You do not need to fight with the flasher drag when fighting the fish. All the different color schemes that we use with the spoon and flasher found in plug color scheme as well. Spoons just flutters and hoochies just twirl with the flasher. But plugs have an erratic action that Chinooks and Coho salmon just cannot resist. If you do find you are hooking many undersized salmon with hoochie and spoon, fish plugs to look for those keepers and avoid the chances of harming the undersized salmon. Now how do we fish with plugs? Plugs come in different sizes and colors. The saying is to match the hatch. What does that mean? Match the plug size to what the salmon is feeding. Various colors and plug sizes can match squid, herring, anchovies, sardine, and other bait. Plug comes in 4” to 7” size. After you caught your salmon, clean the salmon and look what is in their stomach. If you saw squid in their stomach, then use more whitish color plugs and match the squid size. If you see herring in the stomach, use more black, purple, blue, green, chartreuse, and white color plugs and match the herring size. Once you pick your plug of choice, here is how you fish it. You want attach the main fishing line to the plug and with nothing else on the main fishing line. You do not need to fish the plug with an inline flasher. But you can use a dummy flasher attached to your downrigger cable or cannon ball. You do not want to restrict the plug motion in the water, so you want to fish behind the release clip 15 to 25 feet or more. The reason is because the plug will dive erratically up down side-to-side and it can dive as much line you put behind the release clip. When fishing with plugs, the downrigger fishing with the plug will be set below all other fishing line so it will not tangle the other fishing line. You will have to troll fast to get that erratic plug action but not too fast where the plug starts spinning. Plugs will catch you more keeper Chinooks salmon and bigger salmon. Look at the results in Tyee Pool in Campbell River. Plugs hooked more salmon in the Tyee Pool than spoons. You will have more of a fun fight with the fish because you do not have to fight the flasher. Try fish plugs instead of spoons, hoochies with flashers, and bait. It will expand your fishing experience. Here are some colors (Tomic plug color numbers) to try 203, 500, 530, 600, 602, 603, 627, 639, or 700.
