The Trailer Hook

The advantage of catching large fish on a boat is you often can follow its run and put less stress on the line and hook. Beach fishing from shore does not have that benefit. We are fishing in shallower waters and the constant rolls, jumps and power runs often will tear out the hook if the hook is not well placed. The large manufacture hook with the split ring can add restricted tension of movement that will result in lost fish. I often will remove the split ring and hook and replace it with a loop of 30 pound Dacron fly backing and a smaller hook. The loop will be the length of the hook. You will find your landing rate explode due to the hook 360 degree play with no restricted tension to tear out.
