Learn 2 Fish Program

Backed by our quality sponsors, The First Cast Radio and friends held another two Learn 2 Fish (L2F) programs last week here in Nova Scotia. Thanks to Shimano Canada, CKBW and CJHK who all came together again to allow us to provide this wonderful program to grade 4 through 6 students in our region. Thanks as well to my family who come out every year to volunteer and support my efforts; thanks too to John Wiles, program director at Acadia Broadcasting in Bridgewater, NS who volunteers and secures the food and drinks for the kids. Our first session this year was for Hillcrest Academy in Shelburne, NS. We took out 25 kids for an afternoon of fishing in a private pond that we had stocked with trout from NSDAF. Our preceding classroom component taught them all about aquatics, ethics, fishing, species identification and so forth. At the pond we fed them a lot of barbecued hot dogs, juice packs and snacks then we helped them fish for several hours. We wrapped up the day by awarding each child a free Shimano rod and reel combo that take home for future use. Our second session was with Forest Ridge Academy in Barrington, NS. 30 kids took part in the program and everyone enjoyed our efforts and took part in some great trout fishing that day. It is an honor to work with great supporting sponsors, the NSDAF (Nova Scotia Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries) and with so many youth who give this program their all. Two more sessions are booked for later this month at more schools.
