Many of us are looking forward to spring/summer warmwater fishing, and with the many sports shows/ sales promotions going on at this time of year, it is the the best time to consider a new fishing rod ! After comparing the many new products available and speaking with my customers I thought I would share some tips on selecting the perfect rod for your fishing application. #1. Decide which lures/baits that you prefer to use most often. Manufacturers label the rods with reccomendations on line weights and lure weights . #2. Use the various resources on line as a guide only, speak to a reputable sales person who can relate to the types of fishing that you do! #3. Put the rod in your hand! Have the salesperson demonstrate the bend or load of the rod to appreciate how the rod might feel in action. #4. If you already have a reel, bring it with you to shop for a rod, or write down the make model and provide it to the sales staff, it will give you a better idea if the combo will go well together. #5. Graphite rods generally become lighter, react to your actions faster, and transmit sensations (bites) more effectivley as the price tag increases(the bad news) The good news is that there are excellent rods out there for under $100. The better news is there are technique specific rods with tons of lifting power for under $200. The new GL2 rods from GLOOMIS offer a wide variety of actions in 1 and 2 piece. For the descriminating tournament angler or the keen cottage fisherman, I think these rods offer the best value in freshwater spinning or casting rods on the market today! Thanks for sharing, tight lines, John.
