Fly tips for under the float for steelhead
After my report the other day bye bye Mr. stone fly I had a few questions sent to me asking what type and style of flies and jig flies I use so here it is.
When using a fly or jig fly under the float you do not need to run lots of weight near your bait I always try to keep about a 24 between my last split shot and the bait. The reason for this is when you pop or shake your float it will give your bait a more natural movement.
Float style choice?
Was a good question that I had received, depending on depth of water you are fishing? When fishing water 1' to 4' I prefer to use a pencil style float. This reason being with the long shaft of the float sticking down into the water by a few inches. When you give the float a pop or twitch it will give the fly a lot of motion in one small movement of the float. When fishing deeper than 4' I prefer to use a slip float style.
Color choice?
This question was a good one to it made myself think back a related to what colors I was using and where. When fishing near big bodies of what near the mouth of the river or even into the lake I prefer to use white and blacks. As the main source of food near these locations are mostly small minnows and larger bugs. When fishing up stream of a river I prefer to use blacks, olives and shades of greens. As the forage up in the river systems are mostly bugs and worms. Even up in the river system don't even be afraid to try small fresh water shrimp style flies, these flies can be very deadly on clean water days.
Rod Choice?
My : Rod Choice was a StreamSide Steelheader Custom 13 Foot float fishing rod.(Model Number FS1302 IM 8). This rod had the power to turn those big fish of the weekend and land them quickly. I have been using this rod for the past three seasons and wow the power it has to turn those big silver rockets is excellent.
Line choice
My main line on my center pin is 8 lb trilene XT, this line has excellent abrasion resistance so it is excellent for all you steelheaders fishing those small tribs. Also I use a 4lb fluorocarbon lead line.
Well if you have any more questions keep them coming and hopefully I was able to answer some of those questions for you.
Tightlines and have fun
And Thank you
