What Can You Do?

Now that my longest month of the year has gone by, March brings longer days and recurring back problems for my mailman. With new toys arriving daily and the thoughts of hitting the water in May for those beautiful Smallmouth. As I get older and hopefully a little wiser. I realize how lucky we are to be living in a country that has unlimited fishing resources. Years ago my dreams like many other bass anglers was to win lots of tournaments and have sponsors. Don't get me wrong everyone loves to win and have many sponsors, I have been lucky to win a few tournaments and the opportunity to work with some of best companies in the industry. I have been fortunate to be sponsored by & work with Purefishing and Eagle Claw for over 12 years. OK, back to getting older and realizing how lucky I am. My goal every year is not how many tournaments I win but how much fun I have and also how many new people I introduce to our sport. This is what keeps my passion for fishing alive. I have been volunteering for years helping out at kids fishing tournaments and last year was my first time running a kids casting event. It was awesome! We didn't have the numbers I would have liked, but a family came with their two boys. Those boys had a blast, each won a new Rod and too my surprise showed up at our First Kids Tournament of the season a month later. So mission accomplished, another two boys were ignited with a hunger to fish. If you have ever had a chance to take a little person out fishing or even a person that lost their desire to fish, just do it! With our sport being threatened, with our lives being too busy and the sport not being passed down from generation to generation we need to slow down and smell the roses or at least your favorite bass scent. Our kids are spending hours upon hours sitting in front of the TV, computers etc. I have also noticed that we get so competitive in our sport we lose sight that we need to rejuvenate and grow our fishing community. We need to break the cycle by getting our younger generation back to nature. Companies like Purefishing and Eagle Claw are making every effort to buck the trend but they need our help. Pro or amateur, you have the skills to start or re-establish a passion to our sport. I urge all of you great people to take at least one person out for a day or even an afternoon. You won't be disappointed when you see their face light up when they hook a fish. It's not what your sport can do for you but what you can do to help your sport?

You said it Jason. The look on a young anglers face when that fish bites is (to me)priceless. I try and introduce a few kids a year to the sport of angling and last year a young fella had caught a nice bass. The first thing he wanted to do was put it back. EVEN BEFORE THE PICTURE WAS TAKEN. Made me feel great.

Good stuff, I have always enjoyed taking someone new out and have done so every year. My pay is the look on their face when they catch a fish. Gets no better than that.
