Little Things

The little things. Hey everyone. Just a quick tip about paying attention to the little things and making small adjustments to increase your success on the water. I was fishing a Jackall Squadminnow 115SP in a spring tournament this year and noticed how the bass were following underneath it, some suspending about 2 feet under the bait, staring it down, but not committing. I was using what I call the "cold-soak" technique (cast, a couple quick jerks to get the bait to depth, let it sit....and sit...and sit...) which usually drives the smallmouth crazy in cold water temperatures. For some reason they were interested but seemed too lazy to move up the water column to smash the bait. I was fishing very slow so I tried speeding up my retrieve by not letting it sit as long between twitches. I tried smaller twitches, longer twitches, I changed colors, and even threw other baits. I decided to go back to the jerkbait because I knew they wanted it and I was just missing what they were trying to tell me. The Squadminnow was running at a depth of around 3ft so I tied on a Jackall Dowzvido jerkbait to get down a few more feet and put it directly in the faces of those cold and lazy smallmouth. I caught a 3 1/2lber on my first cast with the Dowzvido and knew right away I made the proper adjustment. We tend to focus on the big things such as water depth, temperature, movement, clarity etc. and sometimes forget about the little things (like bait adjustments) that can turn a not-so-good day on the water into a phenomenal one. Happy Fishing!!!
