Novice Spey Angler Journal October 24 2017

Finally all plans are coming together. Going to be the guest of IGUIDEBC and drifting down the upper Cowichan River. As I gather the spey rod with my flies I know Alex West owner and operator will hook me up with some nice Coho salmon. Turned out a wonderful day to drift the upper portion of the Cowichan River. We started at little beach launching site with the pull out being Skutz Falls. We targeted Coho and there was a tremendous amount of Coho and trout at the launch site but this area was there spawning grounds . It was exciting watching them working the reds and competing between them selves. Alas we left them alone and started our downward drift. We couldn't find heavy concentration of cohos and those we saw were on the move. We caught Rainbow trouts, Brown Trouts, and cutthroat trout. Topping it off finding a school of jack springs that chased our flies aggressively. We never did hook up with a coho but we had allot of fun drifting and I learned allot about spey casting from Alex. The speed of the Cowichan river flow I should have used maybe a heavier fly or a heavier sink tip.I was using a t11 and should have been t18 sinking tip. All the great part of learning.
