Fiberglassing the Whole Floor

The sole or the floor of the boat is a crucial part of the boat because it experiences the most wear and tear from feet, rods, weather, and other factors. Therefore, to ensure that this floor was suitable for these conditions, I used a 12 ounce fiberglass cloth to reenforce the floor. To prepare for the laying of the cloth I had to take a DA sander with 80 grit paper and sand the entire floor so that there were no abrasions or raised surfaces on the floor. These raised surfaces would create air pockets in my fiberglass which would allow moister to enter the vessel. Once the floor was properly sanded I laid the cloth in 3 separate sections because I needed to accommodate for the length of the fiberglass. This meant on each new section I had to overlap the new fiberglass over the old to create more strength. Once each section was properly laid out I smoothed the fiberglass and then applied large amounts of resin with additive to create a thickened mixture. I made sure that all the fiberglass was properly absorbed and then repeated this step 2 more times for each other section until the final product was a smooth and strong floor.
