Superior Beauty

Lake Superior is a fisherman's Gem, Mountainous terrain, lakes, rivers and creeks running into her all across the shoreline. I am a trout nut, I love to steelhead, a bulldozing brown, but you just can't beat the art of a speckled trout. Up there with the nicest looking of fresh water fish, if not the nicest! Lake Superior has its own special brook trout called a Coaster. These gems aren't the easiest to find but what a treat when you do. And the Specks in the creeks and rivers are just flaming with colour, and ready to brawl! We used multiple techniques to catch these fish. Depending on depth, river current, or how rough the lake was. Out on Lake Superior we trolled the shore lines with spoons and body baits. The structure was amazing, we were trolling 50 ft off shore with a little rust colour waterfall and it was 110 FOW, needless to say we picked up a couple lakers and some rainbows off that drop. We kept trolling and casting to shorelines and catching fish. We had three boats in the convoy and each boat got 5 Coasters for the day, 15 total for the group. We were all stoked! Our biggest was probably 3.5-4 lbs of pure muscle, tough and scrappy, these fellas and gals were not happy campers but we sure were. Keep safety first when travelling these waters, although beautiful this lake can be unforgiving, know where you are going or go with a local outfitter. Be sure to check local weather, because like all great lakes it can get rough. We also hit some rivers and creeks for the more traditional brook tout/ speckled trout. again switching baits all the time we were tossing jigs, flies, spoons, and baits at these fish. Looking for Eddies, different current changes, big rocks and stumps, and deep pools. Keep an eye out for rising rocks and any other prop destroyers out there. Also river levels can increase rapidly and be dangerous. Again know where you are going and your surroundings. This fishing took all your river steel heading experience, any jigging experience for bass or trout, boat control and any other experience you happen to have. Specks aren't the easiest to catch but they got to eat too. If you display your bait properly and they will smack it, smack it hard. This area of Ontario is a fishing wonderland, they have Monster Pike, Walleye, perch, whitefish, and ever type of trout and salmon you could ask for. And the drive up must be the nicest drive in our province. Hwy 17 is winding and hilly but spectacular views of Lake Superior, a 16 hour drive for me, but I Love every minute of it. The anticipation the whole drive up knowing where were will be fishing the next day. I am getting the jitters right now thinking about it, I could pack up and go tonight. We are so luck to live in Canada, full of fish.
