New Love For Spoons

This weekend I spent about 12 hours on Belwood Lake. To mix things up I decided to target pike and walleye by focusing in on shallow brush along the shoreline and using spoons only. I've never been a huge fan of throwing spoons so I thought I'd give it a shot and see what happens. My son and I spent most of our time in a bay adjacent to the dam along the shoreline. Most of our time was spent at the mouth of the bay in about 6 feet of water. I threw on a silver and red williams spoon, casted right into the brush and got a bite on cast #1. After setting the hook I let my son reel it in. It was a 22" pike and gave the little guy a decent fight. After releasing the pike I threw on another williams spoon, this time orange and silver, casted about 5 feet from my last cast and BAM, i got another hit. Again, I let Keenan reel it in after setting the hook and it turned out to be another pike, about 20". After going 2 for 2, we stayed in that area a few hours and got a few more decent pike. I scouted a few more places around the lake, caught some perch and bullhead but nothing to brag about. The water level in Belwood Lake is getting lower and lower every day and a few of my go-to spots were almost dried up. It was a great weekend. I even let Keenan steer the boat when nobody else was nearby and I was sitting right next to him. This was by far the highlight of his weekend. Talk to everyone next week, I plan on going back to the lake and throwing a dozen new spoons I just purchased. I almost forgot to mention I broke a record on losing lures this weekend. I think I might fill my reels with braid for the rest of the summer. K

I really like my Williams Wobblers but had most luck on a silver and red lucky strike spoon with red eyes until I lost it.

Spoons are one of my favourite baits for pike, my favourite is an oversized williams wobbler
