I've never met a musky angler who likes bluebird days. Flat calm waters and high skies are a nightmare for 99.9% of anglers who target Canada's ultimate apex predator. Add in blistering heat and an armada of Sea Doos and you now understand why musky anglers spend as much money on psychotherapy as they do on really expensive baits. Until last year, I was a proud (?) member of the I Hate Bluebird Days Club until I learned a tactic from good friend and superb musky guide, John Anderson of Ottawa River Musky Factory. John isn't a fan of what I call great golfing day conditions either, but, over his many years chasing muskies for his clients, he's learned a simple, effective way to trigger shut down fish to bite. He uses Stevie Wonder baits! Now, do not Goggle "Stevie Wonder musky baits" unless you want to see your computer explode. In the simplest of terms, a Stevie Wonder bait has two characteristics. First, it's BIG. Second, it's ugly. Really ugly! It can be a lime green, teal blue and red massive Cowgirl with blades the size of hubcaps or a jumbo Bulldawg with pink, orange, yellow and green tones. A Suick that looks like it lost a fight in a paintball tournament is another option. Basically, think colour uncoordinated and you get the unpretty picture. Baits that Stevie W could easily find in a dark room are John's weapons of choice. And they work. Why? I have no idea. And, I really don't care. Maybe muskies are offended by their very obnoxious presence. I know that I am. But, for some reason, these huge, gaudy chunks of plastic or wood produce fish when it's a great golfing day (if there really is such a thing!) and when nothing else is getting so much as a sniff.
