Heading to the next one

Above is a picture of one of last years catch from this lake. It was a tough day due to the fact that I had never fished that way before. It was the middle of summer, hot, clear skies with just a slight chop on the water. For about the first hour we through jerk baits and plastics looking for a quick limit of spots. This is my forte and figured this was the plan and was going to be able to due well over the course of the day. The boater says, "alright we're going after large mouths the rest of the day". Yeah, I thought. We proceeded to flip matted grass the rest of the day (7 hours) and needless to say I was out of my element. I had never truly flipped matts before that day and did not have the set up to do so. I rigged up what I could with what I had but it just wasn't good enough. I got broke off 3 times by large fish but only had 15 pound fluro which just couldn't hold up. I eventually switched my presentation to just the outside edges where if I could get bit, I could handle him. Ended up with 1 large month. A year has passed and I have spent a lot of time and trial / error to figure this technique out. I don't want to say that I have mastered it but going into this tournament I feel confident that I have tied on what it will take to figure out a limit and hopefully bring home a check. Wish me luck.
