Opening Day Bass

Opening day of bass season here in many parts of Ontario doesn't arrive until the 4th Saturday in June .... but in many respects this late opener only adds to the excitement this day-above-all-other days brings. Today I could only spend a couple of early morning hours on my home lake chasing smallmouth, but I had a pretty good idea where they'd be and what they'd hit. My pink and white Rapala X Rap did not let me down and on the very first cast a nice 3 1/2 pounder engulfed this amazing jerkbait. For the next 1 1/2 hours it landed several more up to four pounds, before the ripple disappeared and the lake became flat calm. That's when the trusty green tube came out and caught a couple more sedentary smallies no longer willing to chase down their prey - but accepting a good goby-look alike should it enter their immediate living space. For those fishing Simcoe and other big clear water lake this wknd - try those shallow 5-10 foot waters not far from where bass were spawning and make longgggggg casts so as to not spook the fish. If you can choose your hours ... then realize the earlier you can get out the better!
