Late December Largemouth

Yes, the water is cold and the weather is unstable, but big bass are opportunists. We were catching fish in 18 to 25 feet using a drop shot or jig most of the day, but there is a shallow water window even in the middle of winter. The sun was up and it was pretty clear that day. The warmest part of the day would be around 2 pm. That's when we decided to move over to a shallow rock pile that peaked out at around 5 feet deep. I grabbed my rod with one of my all time favorite winter baits, the River 2 Sea S-Waver. It did not take long before she ate this bait and ate it hard. She was hungry and smart. She would save her energy in this cold water and just move up when the water was warmest and eat good one time. This has been something I have done for years. with the many of my largest fish coming shallow in the winter. Sure the bigger numbers will be deep, but when you are ready to go pig hunting, look shallow when the sun is up and its warm on a winter afternoon. Peace,
