New Spot day 7 fish #4

The bite died on the H2O Xpress Green Sunfish so I slowed it down a little and switched to a Kicker Bait Co. Hightail Worm Carolina rigged. I rigged it with a mono leader tied on a swivel. After the swivel I used a small 1/4 tungsten weight, a small bead, a slapper weight (since the water was murky), another small bead then a Carolina stopper. Set the distance between the hook and the weight only about twelve inches so the fish could find the bait easier. I fished it a little unconventional. I was popping it along the bottom. Moving it steadily about 2" at a time if that. Kept it moving until I hit a rock pile then I would let it rest for about 30-45 seconds. Saw my line take off on one of these pauses and set the hook on this 5 lb 13 oz chunky bass. This one made about 10 good runs before I got it in. Awesome fighting fish.

What I can tell you will help you find spots like this. The most overlooked fishing holes are retention ponds. Mostly because not too many people want to eat anything out of a retention pond. The other reason is that they don't look like they would have fish in most of them. The retention ponds that never dry up hold some pretty big bass and a lot of times these bass aren't pressured from over fishing. What I like to do is look on the FishBrain map to find locations that don't have a lot or any catches posted on them. Those are the places I go check out. Fish them diligently and you will find big bass.

If you dont mind me asking, where in cypress is this? I only have a couple ponds with bass near me, and none are as big as any of those. I understand if you dont want to tell, as some fishermen have their own secret spots. Thanks anyways!
