BOQ Ice and fish report

Over the last few days reports have been popping up about ice fishing down on the bay. It was only a matter of time before people started getting out to the walleye grounds. Big bay has lots of safe ice with sleds and atvs out and about with a solid 8 to 10" of ice. Now im the type of guy that likes to target big fish in heavy current rather than filling the freezer with nice 2-3lb fish. Iv got 2 big fish spots that produce well on first ice (Even though its January now) and even better on last ice. With the weather finally producing ice last week I thought I would take advantage of the opportunity. Sadly I was wrong and when I showed up at first light and I could still see open water so be very very careful people! The ice is not completely ready yet. With the mild weather and rain today the ice is going to be very unstable in any of the high current areas. The fishing has been decent out of big bay and around Trenton. But still, not being able to fish current is very frustrating to me! I managed to pick up a dozen good perch and two nice walleye for the deep fryer. Most fish came on a 1/8 oz green cripple herring in 16 fow. As the sun was setting I moved a little shallower into 13fow, blue 1/4oz buckshot with a minnow took the big fish. Great fight and the highlight of my week. Cheers, Bryan

Nice fish man! We fished the bay Sat & Sun and found the fishing very slow...between a bunch of us we only managed to ice 9 walleye in 2 days! 2 nice fish and the rest eaters.....marked a ton of fish all weekend and more than our share of monsters but they would not want to bite n e thing. I'm wondering if the bad weather and snow turned the fish off?!? Ohh well......back at it next weekend (safe ice permitting)

I like to use big spoons in the 1/4 to 3/4oz size, blue, green and chart are the go to colors tipped with 1, 2, or 3 minnows. Set lines can also be deadly with BIG minnows. And I generally find the big fish when in deep water suspend 2-6 feet off bottom. Cheers, Bryan
