First time was the best time

Today I had the privilege of exposing smallmouth bass fishing to yet another first timer. Tanner is 14 years old and is also my wife's cousin. He will be participating in the Andy Passero memorial bass tournament with me next weekend but had never been fishing for smallies. That was until today and I am sure he will have story's to tell his friends for weeks. The day started off late as the wind was coming in hard out of the east. I decided to wait until 730 to launch and the decision paid off. As we pulled up on our first spot I was explaining how you will see bass swim out from the weeds and chase the drop shot. What I wasn't expecting was 7 smallmouth bass to come barreling out of the weeds on the first drop nearly causing tanner to jump out of the boat in excitement. As I have always told newbies before hook sets are free ,but also as I have learned over time, it takes a few missed fish before the hook can be buried in the top of the lip. As tanner dropped his first 2 fish boat side I could see he was getting frustrated, I looked at him and said "Even the pros drop fish. It is all about getting a feel for the bite". This took all of 3 minutes and he had a fish on and hook right in the top of the mouth. The rest of the morning was extremely active. We fished for a total of 3 hours and 40 minutes boating a total of 13 fish and losing 3 (all at the side of the boat). The biggest fish of the day was only 3 pounds but the smile that was on that young mans face when people asked how the fishing was at the dock was priceless. Next weekend we have the Memorial Tournament and hopefully he has just as much fun then as he did today Tight lines everyone and may your next catch be a personal best.
