Lake St. Clair CBAF Joint Qualifier

On August 25th I fished Lake St. Clair in the CBAF Joint Qualifier. I was paired up with co-angler Ryan Edinborough, a well-known guide and guest on TV shows including Canadian Sportfishing. Neither Ryan nor I had ever fished St. Clair so we kept our strategy simple. AT 7:00AM, we looked at the GPS and decided to target drop offs and ledges. If anyone knows St. Clair, there's a good reason why they call it "The Bowl". We spent about 20 minutes at our first spot, in about 12 feet of water about 2 KM north of the launch and didn't get a nibble so we moved on. We decided to take a run to the north end of St. Clair where they was a pretty steep drop off from 10 feet to 16 feet. The ride took us about 30 minutes. And it was worth it. I caught our first fish within minutes of arriving at the spot drop shotting a JP hammershad by Powerteam Lures. It was a dinker, but the monkey was off our back. For the next 2 hours we absolutely hammered them. Between the two of us we must have caught at least a dozen keepers and we had our limit by 10:30 AM. We stayed on this point another hour or so and culled several times and we guessed we were sitting with a bag of about 10-11 lbs. I kept drop shotting while Ryan dragged a tube off the bottom. Thankfully Ryan is an experienced culler because it got crazy. For the last couple hours, between 12:00-2:00 we tried a couple more spots toward the south end and caught a few fish, but didn't upgrade. At 2:00PM we decided to head back to the launch to be safe. This was the craziest, roughest ride I've ever taken. The swells were a few feet and we were taking air every 30 seconds or so. This rough ride back to launch caused my trolling motor to break, my fish finder to snap off its hinges and I lost my hat. Although rough, it was a blast. Ryan and I had a bag of 11.69lbs and we placed 16th. Not as high as I wanted obviously but we had an incredible time on St Clair. I can't wait to return. Ken

Sorry to hear about your rough ride back to weigh in. These things are going to happen, though. Sounds like you had a great time on St. Clair. Congrats!

Glad to hear you made it back safely Ken as it sounds like it was quite the ride back.
