Feb Steelhead......awesome!
Crazy winter .......swinging for Steelhead in Feb......who would of thought! Looked at the forecast for this past week and thought I better take advantage, first time in my life I have been able to get out with the spey rod in Feb. So I lined up one of my keen spey casting students and he was ready and willing so off we went. You know it's going to be a good day when on your second demonstration cast and swing through the pool you hook a fish. This was only the second time this client was out with me learning to cast a spey rod, he ended the day 4 for 4.......and to do it in Feb.....just awesome. Needless to say he is saving his pennies to buy a NRX spey rod for the upcoming spring season!
Gear used:
NRX 13' 8/9 Spey Rod,
Gloomis Current 9/10 fly reel,
with a 600 grn SA Skagit Extreme Head and Sharskin Shooting line,
with 12' of T 12 tip with 5' of 12lb flouro and an olive sculpin variation!

When we are swinging we are a little limited to what fly patterns we can use, its all about inticing one to hit it. Kind of like chucking a spoon or spinner compared to drifting roe. So this time of year when water is clear its a baitfish bite all the way.....my favorite is an olive sculpin variation. If there is colour, then I'll go for an attractive type pattern.....big purple leech or pink!
