It's Almost Time!

It is almost time to head out on the hard water and get after some early ice Walleye! This year we plan to explore some new small lakes by snowmobile, trying to locate new fishing spots that are "off the beaten path." Peak time to catch Walleye is right at dawn or at sunset each day, no matter what body of water you are fishing on. Exploring new lakes can be intimidating, but rewarding if you can locate schools of fish. Usually we start on the deep edge of extended points then we try to find humps, or soft-bottom flats mid-lake. My favorite lures this time of year are the Rapala Jiggin' Shad Rap, a jig with a soft plastic minnow or frozen minnow, and of course any rattling crankbait. Often I will use the crankbait as a way to attract the fish in and when I notice some activity on my flasher I will change to a jig or the Jiggin Shad Rap to seal the deal. If you are headed out during early ice conditions never travel alone and stay safe! Happy Holidays everyone have a great 2015 season!
