Throw the live bait away
I was lucky enough to get out on a lake that I have not fished in quite a few years Friday and Saturday. It took me an hour on Friday to finally get into some nice crappies and gills. Saturday I met up with three friends and the action started off steady but slowly died off around 11am. When chasing active crappies and bluegills don't even think about using live baits. In this day and age with all the different plastic and jig combinations out there, I have found out the larger gills and crappies will chase and eat a piece of plastic quicker than live bait. The hot combination the last two days were Clam's tungsten jig with a Macki minnow tail. Trick to getting these crappies and gills to hit is to work the jig fast until they start moving up then start slowing down your jigging motion along with slowly pulling the jig away from them. Another trick to hooking the sensitive crappies is the use of 13Fishing's Tickle Stick with a built in spring bobber tip or attach a Rapala spring bobber to the end of your favorite jigging rod. This was a proven fact on Saturday, I out fished my buddy who was not using a spring bobber 2-1.
