First Tarpon on the Fly!

I had an amazing opportunity to spend almost two weeks in Cuba where I would fly fish everyday either with a guide or on my own. (I haven't been active on here for a while, but for those who are wondering I'm totally a fly snob now :) ). Anyways, I stayed in Cayo Coco and was super close to all the famous flats and tarpon lake in Cuba and, I had the most amazing, funny and patient guide in the whole country. My first trip was at a fresh water tarpon lake on the main land, I had no idea what to expect or what I was getting myself into. We loaded the boat up with all our gear, food and most importantly lots of beer. The morning started off slow... we didn't see too much action happening, a few tarpon were rolling around in the distance but the action didn't get hot until the afternoon. The first fish I saw looked like a juvenile sized Tarpon... I wasn't going for size at this point I just wanted to catch one of those damn fish. My guide told me to make my best cast at 1-o'clock and slowly strip and let the tarpon come to me... well... I totally got trigger happy and casted my line on top of the fish because I was super excited and screwed that opportunity up real fast. I had 7 chances with Tarpon that day, I either casted to far, too close or the fish didn't like the fly I was perfectly placing in front of them. I had about an hour left of my trip... so I was getting anxious and annoyed that I didn't have a hook up yet... My guide yelled at me to put my beer down and cast at a "big boy" that was heading straight towards the boat. It was like the casting gods were looking out for me and everything was perfect, the cast, the distance, the fly presentation and the fish. The big boy was following my fly and its mouth opened up, I set the hook as hard as I could and within seconds I broke an 80 lb tippet and the fish was gone. (I still have nightmares about this moment). I honestly wanted to throw up, cry, and possibly drink the rest of the beers in the boat at once. My guide told me not to worry and we could always try tomorrow if the weather permitted. We had another 30 minutes before the trip was done, and another school of tarpon moved I casted perfectly again and had to motivate the fish by yelling at it "Eat it you F%^&$ !!!! " and an hour later I proud to say I caught my first tarpon on the fly!

Great story! I really want to check out Cuba before it turns into another mainstream tourist destination.
