Hot on The Pond

The morning started when the alarm went off 4:30 am. All packed and ready it didn't take long to load the Jeep. With a quick stop at timmie I was off on the first adventure off the year on the pond. A quick stop at my buddy Richard house and we were off and on the water by 6:30 am. Beautiful morning very calm with no wind. I then remembered I forgot to take my gravel as I often get sick and up chuck all that was eaten . My luck the whole day was calm and I made through without embarrassment. We reached our goal one mile East of the island know as the finger. We saw no marking on the sounder but that doesn't mean the salmon are not there. We dropped the down riggers to 150 and 165 feet. It didn't take long we were in fish immediately but they were not keepers. After the third set we finally got a keeper under 10 pounds . Then the next set the same. Just under ten pound. We then kept catching under sized salmon and that was ok as it kept us excited. I started with the AP Tackleworks stainless steel herring. The rod was the Amundson Savvy Sumo Lieutenant Mooching Rod with the the Trend X5 Mooching reel. There is allot of pressure on the line being dragged 150 feet deep and the the X5 mooching reel drag did not slip . Around 10 am we got into a lull with no action. I was thinking of changing the lure to another colour when the rod released and the drag start to run. After a wonderful fight we landed and beautiful 17 pound 2 ounce Chinook salmon. Then again we were into small salmon. What a day of action. This is the third time the AP Tackleworks green herring lure had success and I now will have to let the other AP Tackleworks designs have a chance . Another great organizer was the Rigrap lure lockers . Having a dozen lures all set with leaders and ready for selection.
