Great Slave Giants

Again, Here in the North, the internet is so slow I can leave my room for ten minutes or so before each page finishes loading. This time I've only got enough bandwidth to throw up one picture. Today, like many days, I had clients out in the boat. After Dan and Don's plane landed they were eager to fish and with time winding down I figured we'd go to Portage Inlet. It's a spot close to the lodge so I figured, well my tournament sense figured, less travelling, more fishing.......So we did just that. My guests dropped their lines after a short ten minute boat rip. As per usual all my personal gear was layed out for them to use.....but there was no need. Dan and Don are seasoned veterans in the boat. They admired my Abu Garcia Revo Winches but decided they'd throw the trusty ol' Ugly sticks out instead. After two hours or so they were more than happy to be at nine lake trout with a 6 pound average including two beauts for the smoker I'd later clean once we got back to the lodge...... Then, With time winding down, Danny thought he'd hooked into another average sized trout..... I'd told them in the beginning, there are two things you should never do: 1. Assume your snagged, and 2. Assume you have a small fish on. This fish, like many others, once hooked swam straight at the boat. I gave the troll a shot of gas to help with the hook set and to help catch up some line. He was thankful, and after a long winded fight, Dan reeled in this giant from the depths. Dan's not a small guy and neither was this fish which had a monsterous girth and weighed 32 pounds in the net. I kept it in the net as to leave it unharmed in the end and swim back to the depths to spread its big fish genetics onto future generations. The lodge estimate was that this fish was easily over 50 years old. It was good to see it swim away happy. Great job Dan, I look forward to hiking the river and slaying some graying with you after dinner on the dry fly. We've got work to to tomorrow to top this giant.... Thanks to Wayne Witherspoon at THE FRONTIER FISHING LODGE for being patient with me and helping me learn the ropes of lodge life as we'll as the tricks of the trade and the secrets of the Great wide open. Come Visit the Frontier Fishing Lodge! if not this year, then book for next year! The Staff are friendly, insightful, and very helpful. The Chef, Guy, has been here for 37 seasons and is a wizard behind the scenes. Thanks Guys I've learned alot in my short time here. Special thanks to Berkley, Sebile, Penn, Spidewire, Trapper, Team National Prostaff, and Abu Garcia especially. Without your quality products and mentorship I'd be sunk out here.
