Smashin' Smallmouth

Getting up early Sunday morning after a nine hour bus ride home from a football game in Iowa did not sound appealing at all, but whenever you have the opportunity to fish a new lake you have to jump on it! We pulled up to the ramp right as first light was peaking up above the horizon, and wasted no time getting into the water. With friendly tournament rules set among all of the anglers, we launched and the scramble in my brain began. As I was driving across the lake following some of the local guys that fish the lake often, I saw miles of rocky shoreline that at first glance all looks exactly the same. Getting into something I am comfortable with, I find the first cut off of the main lake and idle my way up the cut. I saw fish busting the surface, and immediately dropped the trolling motor and started throwing a buzzbait toward the breaks. The fish were absolutely killing it, but there was no size with it. After about 30 minutes, I notice another cut directly across the lake and head over to the spot where I would end up not leaving the rest of the day. As I pulled in, I noticed a good looking point with some brush around it. It turned out to be holding a massive school of Smallmouth that bit pretty much any bait I could throw at them. It turned out to be a great day of fishing, making the three hours of sleep after a football game worth while.
