Set your graph for success!

Through the numerous shows, seminars, and posts on NPS, I find myself being asked the same question time and time again. How do you set your graph for optimal performance? Given we are right in the heart of ice fishing season, I thought it would be best to share my answer here. I am currently running a humminbird ice 597 ci hd which is a combo GPS and sonar for ice fishing. To start with when you going to target lakers and whities through the ice you have a personal choice to make. You can either use the zoom view which gives you half the screen zoomed in on bottom and the other half the full water column, or you can use the normal sonar view screen. I use the latter when I am focused on bottom fishing which is 90 percent of the time, so i can get a full screen view of the bottom. However, there are some key adjustments to make. 1. Under settings move the unit mode to advanced. 2. Set the lower range of the water column to 5 feet deeper than you are fishing. 3. Set the upper range of the water column to 45 feet or so off bottom. So if your fishing in 110 feet of water set the upper range to 65 feet. By making these adjustments you get a full screen zoomed in on the bottom giving you a better view of your lure and the fish in these great depths. 4. Set the sensitivity as high as possible without getting much interference on the screen. My last trip out I was able to have it at the max of 20. 5. Set the noise to low, unless you are in close proximity to others with graphs in which case you may have to increase it. Interference on the screen will dictate this setting. 6. Set the surface clutter to as low as possible. Mine is usually around 2or3. 7. Make sure your beam select is set for 200khz. 8. Set your screen speed to the max, which is ultra fast on my machine. This will give you constant updates on how the fish are moving below you and if they are chasing down your lure or not. Hopefully these suggestions will help you maximize your catch this winter. If you have any questions, please feel free to message me.
