School Holiday Fishing

The summer holidays can be a tricky time of year to go fishing. Down here in SA we have some fantastic summer fishing, but the crowds are at their thickest, it can be a windy time of year and the kids are on school holidays so you need to balance your family time fairly. We’ve been enjoying some good fishing in our local waters – mainly for bread and butter species – and by involving our kids it’s meant more time on the water. We have been targeting squid, whiting, snapper, garfish and tommy ruffs with our kids lately – not elite sport fish but reliable targets and good on the table. By launching the boat early we have been trying to avoid the crowds where possible, and we’ve also been doing fair bit of land based fishing too so that our kids aren’t confined in the boat for a whole day. This has given them the chance to go swimming, snorkelling and sandboarding once they want a break from fishing. By sharing your time with the family it makes it easier to slip away for quick offshore sessions too, as the brownie points have been accumulated. We have had some good offshore fishing lately with our Bluefin tuna schooling on our offshore reefs and islands, and the bottom fishing for pink snapper and red snapper and has been really good as well. With school going back this week it will mean the summer crowds will start to thin out and life will return back to normal.
