Early morning King George
Although our inshore whiting can be a bit patchy at this time of year, fishing around the dawn and dusk periods can still bring good results from the rocks. One of the issues at this time of year is the number of trumpeters in the bay, which often out compete the shallow water whiting in getting to the baits. By using firmer baits such as squid and fanning casts into various white holes does help somewhat in reducing the trumpeter by catch. While fishing from the rocks I've been finding a good bite period from whiting just as the sun is rising, and again once it's setting. They are a fun fish to target shore based. Most of the land based fishing requires reasonable casting distance, so I've been using a 9ft Shimano Dialuna rod and a Sedona FE 2500 spooled with 10lb Powerpro braid; a super-smooth reel and a great casting outfit.
