SBS Round 7

Sunday 7th August saw the Southern Bream Series head to Sydney Harbour for round 7 of the series. With 70 odd teams entered and the middle of Winter, we didn't know what to expect from the fishing. Our first spot was not far from the start and it wasnt long before the first legal had fallen for the Squidgie Prawn in Bloodworm. It wasn't long before the second was secured with a fish around the 1kg mark.......2 in the live well and it was only 7:15am......good start to the day. A few smaller fish graced us with their presence over the next half hour with most being under size or Flathead. Deciding to head back to where I had caught the bigger of the fish, Terry came up tight to another kilo plus fish. A short tussle and it was soon in the net. 9am and our bag was filled, a couple of great harbour fish mixed in with some good fish with a just legal rounding out our 5. A move was in order and we decided to head into a bay downstream which we would normally save for our last spot of the day. Sounding our way to the back of the bay, there was a heap of bait with quite a few fish marking around it. Nothing but Flathead and Whiting for the next half hour so we moved over to the Lane Cove river. First stop was a deep corner where once again there was plenty of bait. More Whiting and Flathead and what looked to be a large school of Mulloway but no Bream. Further up stream we headed to fish some flats and edges which have produced plenty of fish for us in the past. It didn't disappoint, within the first couple of cast we had an upgrade for the just legal. Fishing our way from deeper to shallower, we found the size drop the shallower we fished. We decided to head back out towards the drop off and fish the deeper flat, hoping for some more upgrades. It wasn't long before Terry came up tight to yet another kilo plus fish (1.2kg) and our bag was starting to look pretty good. The next couple of hours produced a few ever so slight upgrades on the 2 smaller fish in our bag and a heap of by catch. With only an hour left of the day, we headed back to our first spot to hopefully upgrade some more. It turned out to be the right decision with another substantial upgrade in the last half hour or so.......which was off the same mark as the mornings bigger fish. Heading back to the weigh in we felt we had a pretty good tournament compared to the last couple on the Harbour where the better fish had avoided us. the bag of 5 weighed in at 4.35kg which secured us 2nd place behind what can only be described as a freakish 5+kg bag. Very happy with our result and bridesmaids again on the Harbour. The gear used was a mixture of Stradic FJ and Rarenium reels paired with Anarchy and Zodias rods, 3lb Power Pro and Ocea leaders in 4lb. Stand out plastics for the day were the 80mm Squidgy prawn and 100mm wriggler in Bloodworm.
