Good To Be Back On Open Water

Usually, my open water fishing season starts at the beginning of April. This year was pushed back to the second weekend of May. With Walleye opening at midnight, my wife Heather and I headed out for a quick fish and managed to land five. We kept three for fish fry and it was time to go back to the trailer and get some sleep, as I had to be up early to head over to Balsam lake for the North GTA Bass Anglers Open Pike Tournament. My partner for the event, Matt Pezzetta and we quickly agreed on a game plan and stuck to it throughout the day. We were fortunate to finish in the money with a fifth place finish. We had action from Pike consistently all day long. Even thou there was other boats working the same general area, we were able to upgrade our fish as the day went on. We didn't have any big brutes in our bag, but a good average is what kept us in the hunt. The key to our success, was our electronics and coming back to fish a spot on a spot... We caught fish on everything from jerkbaits, swimbaits, buzzbaits, lipless crankbaits, spinners and spoons. This tells me the fish were active, but holding on specific structure. This was my second year fishing this event, and I would like to thank all the organizers and volunteers for a job well done.
