To believe or not to believe in Global Warming

I read in a Buffalo news paper a few weeks ago that they removed the Ice boom by the mouth of the Niagara River the first tues in March which Is the earliest since it was installed in 1964. For anyone that doesnt know, the Ice Boom keeps ice from flowing down the Upper Niagara River and clogging Hydropower intakes. I know all this because i'm an avid Smallmouth fisherman who loves to keep close taps on conditions to get a jump on some early season Smallmouths! I've watched the Ice Boom camara for years on-line, checked updated satelite images and called friends in the area trying to collect any info i can. This year there was vertually no ice on Erie and water temps stayed consistantly around 35! 2 years ago we got out the last week of March which was the earliest we ever started our season. Water temps after ice out that year was about 35 degrees. Water temps the first week of March this year were 37 and in the shallows I would assume even warmer. By the first week of April, water temps will definately be in the 40's which is unheard of! This trend of warmer winters are speeding up the growth of our game fish at a incredible rate! For example, every year we are seeing more and more big Smallies at tournament weight-ins. 6 and 7 pounders are showing up regularly and last year on Lake Simcoe an 8 pounder was weighed with others reportedly caught during the prefish. I remember as a 15yr old thinking to myself that before I die I have to boat a 6 pounder. Well, fast forward 25 years later, i've caught several 6 pounders and a few 7's! My new goal is an 8, but I'm thinking a 9 will be the true mark of trophy Smallmouth fisherman and I believe it will happen here in Southern Ontario. I packed up my gear a couple of weeks ago to fish several finger lakes in the state of New York after hearing the ice was off the lakes and to my disbelieve, water temps were already in the low to mid 50's and we found weeds everywhere! I've been fishing those lakes for years and weeds don't usually start growing till late April, early May, but I'm assuming because of the bad ice conditions this past winter, the weeds just didn't die off. I'm guessing we are at least 3 weeks ahead of typical spring conditions, maybe a month! You have to believe that things will enventually cool off and get back to normal, whatever normal is and although it's not unusual to have temps in the 70's for a day or so in March, I can't remember a 2 week period so warm. In conclusion, it's bittersweet for me as winter has always been too long and too cold for my liking and although i embrace the early Spring with open arms, I question the negative effects that may come with it down the road. Believe in global warming or not, things are changing and we need to have a better understanding of whats going and do our part to help where we can. Until then, i'll causiously enjoy this warm weather and the extended season!

Well put Big Jim...As long as the gobies keep getting bigger, so will the smallies!! However Global Warming makes me feel bad for the trout guy's, and Algonquin Park!

Just remember that there was a mile thick ice sheet over Algonquin Park 10,000 years ago...it was already headed north then and it has come and gone at least four times since the great lakes were formed and we had **** to do with that...but it is nice. Saw a guy on CNN a few weeks back that said everyone likes to talk about cycles in the weather...problem is we don't know if a true cycle is 100,300 or 300,000 years...makes sense to me.
