Saving your expensive twitchbaits!

I remember the days when a good Jerkbait cost me $4-$6! Although there are still baits in that price range, some of the high end Japanese baits like the Lucky Crafts and Megabass baits can run you $25-$30 a bait! I've been using the Megabass vision 110's over the past 6 years simply because they catch more fish in almost every situation, especially when conditions are tough! It's rare when a Megabass gets out fished on the same boat by a competitors bait. They are "out of the box ready" with no fine tuning necessary and dozens of color patterns that all work! Plus the finish on these baits are the best in the industry! As good as the finish is, sharp treble hooks scrapping the side of any bait will eventually wear the paint down, even a Megabass. Coupled with the fact that the popularity of these baits make it hard to find your favourite colours, it hurts when the finish has been rubbed off and you have to pull another out of its package. Well, we came up with a solution years ago that has saved us a lot of money. All you need is a high quality nail polish top coat that can be found at any Shoppers Drug Mart or your wife's make-up cabinet. Take the front and middle hooks off and hang your bait from the back hook. With the brush, apply a light even coat on the entire bait. The drying process happens fast, so the key to a smooth finish is to do it quickly. When the topcoat is wet, you'll find that it has a pretty potent smell, but once dry (which takes about 24hrs), it'll be completely scent free! One very important note! If you have any Matte finished bait from Lucky Craft, i'd stay away from trying to protect it as i've found out the hard way that some will bubble. No worries with any of the Megabass finishes! This is truly a great way to add life to any of your specialty hardbaits! If you decide to hang your baits outside because of the smell, I'd invest in a good security camera or at least a Pitbull! Cheers! Nick
