Crankin' Quebec Largies

Headed out to a small Quebec lake this past Thursday. Conditions were sunny, very warm, and the wind was quite blustery - prime weather for tossing crankbaits! Most of our largemouth were positioned just off of large boulder rock - especially if the area contained some green weed - and right on the break. Fish were definitely up shallow feeding on baitfish and craws and were smackin' cranks in less than six feet of water. I stuck with the crankbait pattern all day, only changing up to toss a spinnerbait across a windblown flat. The one fish I got on this bait (in pic above) smoked the white double-bladed model in 3 feet of water. If you look closely you can see that he is blind in one eye. All of my other fish, including the 4lb big fish of the day, came on my favourite crank - a weathered and beat up Bagley Balsa B in a craw pattern. This bait is insane and seems to out fish other cranks 2 to 1. Great wobble and dives down 2 to 3 feet. Andy worked a LiveTarget shallow swimbait. He did get action, but not nearly as much. Funny enough, many of the fish would miss his bait or short strike it. We ended the day with 30 largemouth for just over five hours work. A pretty decent day. Highlights included a chunky 4lber and a few high 3's. Now is the time to get out and throw shallow cranks for largies. They are grouped up in the skinny water and the bite is definitely on! Leaving this week for some time out on the east coast. Tagging along on a Giant Blue Fin Tuna charter. I saw a pic of an 860lb fish they got last week. Insane!!!! Report to come when I return back... Happy Fall Fishing, Justin
